I’m Katie Slater, a 22 year old Journalism and Media student at Coventry University (although not for long!)
I have created this blog as my final project for my degree.
Since Mattel created Barbie in 1959 she has constantly been criticised for creating impossible standards for women. But under the surface Barbie stands for much more. As a positive rolemodel for girls and women who believe they can achieve anything, Barbie has had over 130 careers including police officer, vet and even an astronaut proving that you shouldn’t judge a doll by her plastic. My series of blog posts explore why Barbie has such a bad reputation and how, instead, we should be focusing on the positive influence that she can have on young girls and women alike.’
Please note that a lot of my posts include tongue in cheek comments and humour to get my points across. If you don’t have a sense of humour or you like to take everything seriously then this probably isn’t for you.
I’d just like to point out that I have spent ages researching everything Barbie but I do not pretend that I’ve written everything I’ve posted, myself. A significant part of researching is seeing what other people have written about your chosen subject and I see no problem in referencing stuff that I’ve found. Anywhere that I have included anything that I haven’t written myself I have included references to the original so that you can go and take a look at what they have to say for themselves. And I strongly suggest that you do do this because I’ve come across some really interesting things. That said I have also added lots of my own opinions because, afterall, isn’t that what you want from a blog! Fundamentally, as well as educating you slightly the whole purpose in writing this (apart from I had to submit something otherwise I’d fail my degree) was to inform and ENTERTAIN you! So in the words of the great Robbie Williams… Let meeeeeeeeeeee, entertain you!
Interested? You should be…
If you would like to get in contact with me personally and privately then please do not hesitate to do this using the form below. (Comments telling me how brilliant I am, or offering me a multi-million pound job offer are more than welcome… as are both positive and negative opinions about my blog)
